In July 1979, Big Bird made a historic guest appearance at Houston’s Miller Outdoor Theatre, drawing thousands of families to Hermann Park. During the special event, the beloved Sesame Street character served as a guest conductor for the Houston Symphony, singing and dancing along to iconic songs from the show
In 1968, Theatre Under the Stars produced “Bells Are Ringing,” starting a tradition of free musicals that lasted at Miller Outdoor for several decades, until the company’s move downtown. Miller fans cherish the memories of seeing musicals under the stars on The Hill.
Dr. Anne Lundy is a celebrated Houston conductor and musician, best known for being the first African American woman to conduct the Houston Symphony at the Miller Outdoor Theatre in 1989. She is an icon in the Houston Arts scene, former Executive Director of Miller partner Community Music Center of Houston, and continues to grace the Miller stage with her music to this day.
Did you know that before the world knew them as Destiny’s Child, they were Girl Tyme – a group of talented Houston girls with big dreams?
Long before the global Tours and Grammy wins, “Queen Bey” and her group graced the Miller stage in the early ’90s!
They performed as part of our iconic Juneteenth celebrations, produced by Reverend C. Anderson Davis. It’s an honor to have been a part of their journey from local talent to global icons.
Before she became the Queen of Tejano Music, a 16-year-old Selena Quintanilla took the stage at Miller Outdoor Theatre with her family band, Los Dinos.
Years before chart-topping albums, sold-out arenas, and a Grammy Award, Selena was already captivating audiences with the charisma, talent, and stage presence that would make her one of the most beloved performers in music history.
Her appearance at Miller represents a special moment in Houston’s cultural story, a glimpse of a rising star before the world knew her name. Today, Selena’s influence continues to inspire generations of artists and fans across Texas, the United States, and beyond.
