DISCOVER THE STORIES BEHIND THE SOUNDS
German and Czech immigrants brought the accordion to Texas in the 1800s. Mexican musicians helped transform it into the sound of conjunto and Tejano music.

Texas is one of the few places where polka and mariachi traditions influenced one another, creating sounds found nowhere else in the world.

Houston is home to one of the largest zydeco communities in the world and has helped keep this Gulf Coast tradition alive for generations.

From accordions and fiddles to dance halls and stages, discover how generations of Texans turned music into living heritage.

For generations, Texas music has brought communities together. From German and Czech polkas to Mexican conjunto, Cajun, Creole, zydeco, country, and western swing, the sounds of Texas reflect the people who built the state. Through music, dance, storytelling, and performance, traditions are passed from one generation to the next, keeping Texas heritage alive.
Miller Outdoor is also a place where Texas Heritage is celebrated – from our annual Juneteenth Culture Fest to other traditions that have found a home at Miller, including an annual Memorial Day Weekend Motown show (Dancin’ in the Street…Motown and More Revue) and Festival Chicano.

For more than three decades, Texas Folklife’s Accordion Kings & Queens has celebrated one of the state’s most influential instruments—the accordion. Presented annually at Miller Outdoor Theatre since 1990, the concert showcases the cultural diversity of Texas through performances spanning conjunto, polka, zydeco, Cajun, and other accordion traditions. Produced by Texas Folklife, a statewide nonprofit dedicated to preserving and presenting the living cultural heritage of Texas, Accordion Kings & Queens brings together legendary performers, emerging artists, and youth musicians from the organization’s Big Squeeze accordion program. Today, the event remains one of Miller Outdoor Theatre’s signature cultural celebrations, welcoming thousands of Houstonians each year to experience the sounds, stories, and traditions that continue to shape Texas.
