A Trip To The Moon
Houston’s wind quintet will create a live soundtrack to Georges Mèliés 1902 silent film A Trip to the Moon, known for its breakthrough special effects and storytelling, using music from the 1875 operetta of the same title by Jacques Offenbach.
Written by Mark Mellits and commissioned especially for the anniversary of the moon landing, Apollo is characterized by driving rhythms and styles that arose in the 1960’s – minimalism and funk. The piece will be accompanied by film footage from the Apollo 11 lunar mission, courtesy of the Lunar and Planetary Institute.
In Voyager Golden Record Suite WindSync will celebrate NASA and the relationship between Earth and space by performing music included on the Voyager Golden Records, curated by a committee led by astrophysicist Carl Sagan. The quintet’s musical selections will be interspersed with audio recordings of folk music, speech, and natural events, and accompanied by projections of images from Earth.
This is a ticketed event for the covered seating area. Free tickets are available (4 per person over age 16 while they last) at the Miller Outdoor Theatre box office the day of the performance between the hours of 10:30 AM-1:00 PM. If tickets remain at 1:00 PM, the box office will re-open one hour before show time to distribute the remaining tickets.
